FAI algorithm Information Tips These are 250-m resolution MODIS images showing the floating algae (small outstanding slicks on a near-homogenous background) near Qingdao using the FAI (Floating Algae Index) algorithm. The algorithm is less sensitive than other algorithms (e.g., NDVI) to observing conditions (aerosols, solar angle, viewing angle, sun glint), resulting in more homogeneous image background where floating algae can be better visualized and delineated. The original images from the NDVI algorithm can be found here. This is a collaboration between the University of South Florida and Ocean University of China.
